Swansea and Gower Liberal Democrat Manifesto 2012Swansea and Gower Liberal Democrat Manifesto 2012 - Election 3 May 2012

In tough times the Swansea Liberal Democrats put local people first. That's why this year the Council did not add any extra financial burden on people and their families and decided to Freeze the Council Tax for 2012/13. Should we be successful in the May Elections, we would work to continue to keep Council Tax low (we are already an average of £200 lower per year than Labour run Neath Port Talbot) The Liberal Democrat led Administration in Swansea has also cut waste and made efficiency savings whilst improving and investing millions more into vital front line services like Schools and Social Services. We have achieved all of this despite having to deal with the years of neglect left by Labour. We all remember what happened with the Leisure Centre under Labour and have seen the investments made in our city and its people by the Liberal Democrat led Administration.

Some of the investments made in our city and its people by the Liberal Democrat led Administration:

  • New Leisure Centre opened

  • New Central Library and Contact Centre

  • New Bus Station

  • Millions invested into New and Refurbished Schools

The Liberal Democrats have delivered value for money as well as created and protected local jobs whilst improving services and investing in our City and its people. In tough times the Swansea Liberal Democrats will continue to put our City, local people & their families and local communities first. The Liberal Democrats will continue to make Swansea a fairer, greener, cleaner and more prosperous place to live and work.

Liberal Democrats will continue to help people and their families and will work with others to reduce Poverty by:

  • Reducing the cost of school meals for all Primary school children whilst continuing to improve their nutritional value.

  • Providing free swimming for under 16s in local council run swimming pools for all school holidays.

  • Introducing a Financial Literacy programme to support people and their families.

  • Keeping Council Tax low. It is already an average of £200 less per year than in Labour run Neath Port Talbot.

  • Protecting bus services and provide free bus travel for under 16s during school term holidays and on Saturdays.

Liberal Democrats will continue to invest in Our City and the Bay and will make it greener and cleaner by:

  • Continuing investing in the City Centre to improve it and support businesses.

  • Continuing to invest in facilities for the Bay and support local business and tourism.

  • More investment in roads, pavements and new energy efficient street lighting.

  • Continuing to green the City Centre with projects such as retaining part of the Vetch as a green space.

  • Introducing a Carbon Budget so that the Council leads in reducing carbon emissions by 30% over the next ten years to add to the 8% they reduced emissions last year (2010/11).

  • Developing and improving provision for cyclists and the network of cycle paths.

Liberal Democrats will continue to invest in and support our communities by:

  • Continue to invest in new school buildings and facilities.

  • Invest in more NEAT (Neighbourhood Environment Action Teams) teams to clean up areas.

  • Provide more apprenticeships and jobs for local people through the Council and the companies that it works with.

  • Establishing a fund where local young people will help decide how it is spent in their communities.

  • Introducing more Housing in Multiple Occupation enforcement officers and introducing a registration scheme for letting agents.
