The Swansea and Gower Liberal Democrats are campaigning hard to save local post offices threatened with closure.

Swansea West Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Councillor Peter May advises: "The message to people who think this is a lost cause is they should not give up hope - we have saved post offices before by putting forward a strong case, with public support, and by gathering the relevant data. You have to make your voice heard."

Local Assembly Member Peter Black has raised the issue in Welsh Assembly debate, questioning Labour on why they have stated that they wished to support Post Offices, but are also allowing the UK government to take away business from the network.

"By taking away work from Post Offices such as TV licenses, vehicle excise duty and passport authentication, through encouraging other methods of payment, Labour have cost the network over £165million. In reality this figure will be higher as most Post Offices sell other items, such as newspapers, sweets and groceries. The loss of footfall for them and neighbouring shops has made many community shops unviable.

"If Labour were serious in their claim to support the Post Office network, they would be putting more pressure on their UK counterparts to stop taking business away from Post Offices." said Mr Black.
