Your Fairwood Ward Swansea Council Candidate | 3 May 2012

John Bushell

John Bushell | Fairwood Council Candidate

My name is John and I have been living in Swansea for 23 years. I live at 447 Gower Road with my wife, Patricia and will celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary in April 2012. We have two sons, Matthew who is the Middle East Director of Bell and Pottinger in Bahrain, and James who is a policeman with The Metropolitan Police force in London. I was formally a teacher with Ceredigion and latterly in West Glamorgan. In 1980, I was director of the Ceredigion Brass Quintet which won 'The Open' in the Gorseinon 1980 National Eisteddfod. I was Swansea Secretary for NASUWT Teaching Association for eleven years. I have been director and conductor of the National Youth Brass Ensemble of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as well as director and conductor of the European Youth Brass Ensemble and String Consort co-ordinating 24 countries. As an elected Swansea Councillor between 1993 and 2004 I gained a huge understanding of Housing and for a period became the Vice -Chair of Housing. I have also been Secretary of 'ACTS' which was a charity providing soup runs to the homeless of Swansea. For the last seven years I have been Chief Executive of a Swansea Charity, 'Haven Trust Supporting People Limited', which provides 24 hour residential support for tenancies and those who are struggling with drugs and alcohol through an abstinence model. I therefore have a specialist interest in Housing, Education, Music and the Arts, and Social Services. I would like to bring this experience to represent the residents of Fairwood Ward.

I will be standing as the LibDem Candidate for the Fairwood Electoral Ward which includes the communities of Three Crosses and Upper Killay. Fairwood Council Candidate

Previously I have been successful in gaining funding for the refurbishment and recladding of council homes in Upper Killay and the double glazing of council homes in Three Crosses. Successful traffic calming measures were introduced to Gowerton Road, Three Crosses. A Traffic Island was introduced at my request near the Upper Killay Post Office. I am seeking to become a governor at Cila CP School and, when a vacancy arises, at Crwys CP school.

Case work in Fairwood revolves around insufficient dog bins, fouling of pavements, illegal parking at schools including pavement parking, fly-tipping, speeding and pot holes. I am doing all I can to resist any further building development in the Clyne Valley area.

My charity work in Swansea is well known and as a former teacher, Swansea Councillor and Chief Executive of my own company in Swansea, I believe that I would bring the experience that is needed to represent the residents of Fairwood. I think that written communications via a 'Libdem Focus' leaflet should be regular and that there should be monthly ward surgeries in each community so that there is a face-to-face opportunity to discuss the issues that affect the residents of the areas of Upper Killay and Three Crosses.
