My name is Mike and I will be standing as the Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate in the Lower Loughor ward in the Swansea Council elections on May 3rd. My wife Cath and I live in Crofty. Our daughter Elizabeth has just had a baby which means that I am now a grandfather, though that takes some getting used to! I work at Swansea University and have had 13 books published. I previously worked for many years at Aberdeen University and also for the Army Education Corps, where I served in Germany, Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Oman. When I lived in Aberdeen I was a city councillor and Chair of the Libraries and Museums Committee. My ward largely consisted of council housing, which gave me a very good understanding of the problems council tenants typically face. I am an active member of my church, Parklands Evangelical, and am proud of the work the church has been doing to provide night shelter for homeless people in Swansea in the past six months. I strongly believe that each person can make a difference and that we all have a duty to try to help those less fortunate than ourselves and to improve our city and our world where we can.
If elected as councillor for Lower Loughor I promise that I will be an active and energetic councillor, who will keep in touch through regular monthly surgeries, the Loughor Focus local newsletter which I have edited for the past four years and regular visits and phone calls to constituents to see how I can be of help. I will work with Loughor's residents to address the wards routine problems such as the lack of sufficient dog bins, fouling of pavements, parking problems outside Casllwchwr school on school days and Bwrw road at weekends, fly-tipping, especially outside the Spar shop and in streets like Heol Pen Y Beili, traffic speeding on Castle street and Culfor road and of course pot holes. I also want to work with the council and people in the community to find solutions to problems like the lack of anywhere for older kids to go in the evening in Loughor. A local volunteer-run youth club facility would help keep the youngsters from getting into trouble through boredom.
